About the Programme

Le'o 'o e Kalifanafana - is a radio programme in the Tongan language featuring from Wellington Radio Access 783 AM every Thursday from 9pm-10pm. This radio programme was established in year 2000 as a respond to the needs of Tonga people in the Wellington region. The previous government had a pacific initiative called the 'Pacific Capacity Building' programme. A desire for pacific communities to take up ownership and leadership of the poor outcomes of Pacific peoples in the areas of education, health, criminal and other related factors such as housing and economic development etc. The Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs led this project in consultation with key government agencies to ensure they have Pacific strategies in place to address these issues. A programme of action was developed in 8 regions throughout NZ. One of the key milestones was the dissemination of information to Pacific peoples in their own languages. Le'o 'o e Kalifanafana was established mainly to relay to Pacific peoples especially the Tongan families the government initiatives/ programmes are available, how to access these opportunities, and sustaining and developing skills that will be useful in the long hall. Now, the Le'o 'o e Kalifanafana recognised not only the importance of improvig social and economic status of Pacific peoples but also the cultural and spiritual aspects of life. Therefore the current programme featuring: - Current issues relating to social and economic development - news and media releases of government programmes and services, and how to access these - news and current affairs locally and internationally esp from Tonga - children's programme - Christian teachings and key principles of life.
