About the ProgrammeYou’ve seen the Like Minds ads on TV with John Kirwan and other such people, now try the radio show!
Like Minds, Like Mine is a Ministry of Health initiative promoting mental health and focusing on reducing stigma and discrimination experienced by people who use mental health services (consumers) .. While the TV ads have a high profile, all over New Zealand there are community based teams providing education and information direct to individuals and organisations. There are three Like Minds, Like Mine teams in the Wellington region – a Pasifika team run by Vakaola, Te Kowhao, a kaupapa Maori team and a mainstream programme run by Case Consulting which is a consumer-owned company involved with mentoring, educating and research. Like Minds Like Mine Wellington also provides workshops through First Voices, as well as supporting the national programme through national resource development and evaluation. It is this team that is producing the radio show.
Over its 11 years of existence Like Minds, Like Mine has won many awards for its campaign, along the way publishing major pieces of research such as Respect Costs Nothing a report on the effects of discrimination and stigma, I Haven’t Told Them, They Haven’t Asked, a report on consumers’ employment experiences and Fighting Shadows, about the effects of self-stigma on the lives of mental health consumers. Mental health is not just about medication, not just about health and hospitals; it’s about fundamental human rights. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights says everyone is born free and equal in dignity and in rights – why then, is there separate legislation for people with mental illness and people without? The NZ Bill of Rights state we all have the right to refuse medical treatment, but the Mental Health Act states we do not.
What is NZ saying about the rights of those with experience of mental illness? What is NZ saying about the equality of people with experience of mental illness? Listen in to the Like Minds Like Mine Radio Show for topical discussion on these big issues as well as well as the latest research, music, events and “hotspots” about mental health. James Kia ora my name is James and I do some interviewing for the show and co-run it with Meesh. I have worked in mental health for 3 years doing a range of stuff in the consumer movement. I am passionate about reducing stigma and discrimination that people with mental illness experience and look forward to showcasing events and people in the mental health sector. james@caseconsulting.co.nz Meesh You won’t hear too much from Meesh sitting in the recording part of the studio, but that’s the way she likes it; a background in fine art and psychology doesn’t help much when you’re on the air. A Like Minds Like Mine administrator at Case Consulting, she’s your man if you want mental health awareness training for your workplace, she’s also the person to call if you have something you want to promote on our show. meesh@caseconsulting.co.nz Colin I’m the old fogey of the show. I helped establish the Christchurch mental health consumer radio show Quiet Minds on Plains FM 96.9 in 2004 and was part of the team that won the National Radio award for that show in 2006. That was a blast and so is working on this show! I love getting people to talk about themselves and the amazing stuff they get up to and so that’s what I do. It’s terrific fun and I find it inspiring too, hearing how others keep themselves well and keep stirring up the establishment. Long live the revolution! |
