About the Programme

This programme began as a way to advocate against the benefit cuts and Employment Contracts Act in 1991 and has continued since then presenting views and news about the issues and political events impacting on beneficiaries and low waged New Zealanders.

Hosted by Graham Howell it has used a variety of styles from presenting edited highlights of public meetings; advice on benefit entitlement; interviews of the "street people" community; interviewing representatives of trade unions and community groups; the occasional MP; and commentary about legislative changes being proposed by Government, the draft annual plan of our city council and other arms of the state.

A wide range of issues impact on New Zealand's poor.  Changes to human rights legislation, the administration of the benefit system, the New Zealand economy, the world economy, environmental issues.   Any issue you can think of can be covered.

While very political the programme is not party political and on occasion its presenter is surprised the programme has not been pulled off air because of the nature of the criticisms of Ministers of the Crown, departmental policy and others.

After nearly 200 programmes it is still going strong and there is never any problem coming up with subject matter.

Listen in to hear some raw comments on the issues affecting the country's poorest.
