About the ProgrammeRadio Luna is a one-hour weekly world music variety show aimed at showcasing all kinds of great music fusions and culture. Since first going to air in April 2002 we have created and broadcast hundreds of shows on a wide range of musical styles and topics. We started out with a focus on Latin, Afro and World Music in general, but we've widened our scope and are now exploring any other artists and styles that we like. We've profiled artists - ranging from Cuban bass legend Israel Lopez Cachao, bossa nova composer Vinicius da Moraes, Cameroon Sax legend Manu Dibango, Argentine tango genius Astor Piazzolla, funk/soul genius Stevie Wonder, the 'BAD' James Brown and many many others. We've researched and presented the origins - of salsa, afro-cuban rumba, argentine tango, boogaloo, samba, samba-reggae and many other genres. We’ve compiled many special theme shows - such as new directions in Latin music, Brazilian chill, Latin lounge, Afro-beats, New York Salsa, world tuba music, French Cafe, Latin Brass, Bollywood, Kiwi Dub, Wellington Grooves, Songs from Aussie Op-shops, Kids shows, Christmas Specials and various other personal music favourites. We've done special event shows - featuring recordings and artists from WOMAD (2003, 2005, 2007), the Jambalaya Festival of Rhythm and Dance (2004, 2005, 2006), the NZ Festivals of Tango (2003, 2004, 2005), Cuba St Carnivals, Whopper Choppers, and the legendary Luscious Lola extravaganzas We'd be very surprised if you can't find something you like in the Radio Luna playlist. Radio Luna - are Marian Cameron, Bill Vella, Gordon Cessford, Bernie Napp, Victoria Quade, Ron Fischer and guests. These Radio Luna DJs have collectively spent hundreds of hours obtaining music, researching the musicians and their art, and presenting the some of the stories behind the music. Why - because we like it and we want to share it. Hopefully we can help motivate folks to get into it themselves! Plus we love helping out with Wellington Access Radio stuff, and have organised bands, dancers and DJ set-ups for various events run by the Station team (who we think are legends!). Sponsors - We’re also very lucky to be supported by the very worthy company Juakali World. It is run by people with a compelling desire to share the art and culture of Africa with as many people as they can, at the same time looking for ways to empower the local artisan or street vendor by opening up markets for them in other parts of the world. They are also distributors for Putumayo World Music, who also supports our show. Putumayo World Music has become known primarily for its upbeat and melodic compilations of great international music characterized by the company's motto: "guaranteed to make you feel good!". By combining appealing music and visuals with creative retail marketing, and a social conscience supporting, recording and distributing many emerging world artists, Putumayo has developed a unique and altruistic brand identity featuring innovative new sounds and fusions - a rarity in today's somewhat recipe-based music industry. As well as directly supporting the artists, a portion of proceeds from each of their CD sales goes to a nominated charity related to the artist. We’re proud to be backed by the likes of these folk!
