About the ProgrammeMost plays and novels tell a story. If you go into any public lending library, you will find hundreds of novels written by English and American authors – for English and American readers. Very little is available that is written by New Zealanders for New Zealanders. New Zealand authors hope that publishers, in what is a very difficult market, will take more interest in novels in which at least some of the action takes place anywhere but here. Books by local authors are often boring, and never funny. Ridley-Smith Theatre will be mainly light comedy about this country and the people who live in it. They can provide all the material a script-writer needs. If you expect to hear stories about violent crime and societal breakdown, find another time and place. Our aim is to entertain you, and hopefully, to make you feel better after half an hour with us than you did when we began. We are using great actors with well-developed reading skills, and we like to think that you will be able to hear every word of our plays. |
